Barbell Upright Row

Barbell Upright Row

The barbell upright row is a compound exercise that primarily targets the shoulders and upper back. It's a popular movement for building shoulder strength and enhancing upper body muscle definition. This exercise requires attention to form to maximize effectiveness and reduce the risk of injury.

How to do Barbell Upright Row

  1. Start with the Grip: Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and grab a barbell with an overhand grip. Your hands should be slightly narrower than shoulder width.
  2. Initial Positioning: Hold the barbell in front of your thighs, arms extended, with a slight bend in the elbows.
  3. Lift the Barbell: Lift the barbell straight up towards your chin, leading with your elbows. Keep the bar close to your body.
  4. Elbow Height: Continue lifting until your elbows are in line with your shoulders and the bar is at chest level.
  5. Lower the Barbell: Slowly lower the bar back to the starting position in front of your thighs.

Form Tips

  • Elbow Alignment: Ensure your elbows remain higher than your forearms throughout the lift.
  • Controlled Movement: Perform the movement in a controlled manner, avoiding any jerking or swinging of the bar.
  • Keep the Bar Close: The bar should travel close to your body to maximize engagement of the targeted muscles.
  • Avoid Straining Your Wrists: Maintain a neutral wrist position throughout the exercise.

Primary Muscles Targeted

  • Shoulders (Deltoids): Particularly the lateral (side) and anterior (front) deltoids.
  • Upper Back (Trapezius): This muscle is engaged during the lifting phase.
  • Rhomboids: Also involved in the upward movement of the barbell.

Secondary Muscles Targeted

  • Biceps: Assist in the lifting motion of the exercise.
  • Forearms: Engaged for maintaining a firm grip on the barbell.
  • Core Muscles: The abdominals and obliques help stabilize the body during the exercise.
