Russian Twist

Russian Twist

The Russian Twist is a dynamic core exercise that targets the obliques, helping to build rotational strength and improve overall core stability. It's a versatile movement that can be performed with just body weight or by adding resistance like a dumbbell or medicine ball.

How to do Russian Twist

  1. Sit on the floor: Start by sitting on the floor with your knees bent and feet flat on the ground.
  2. Lean back slightly: Lean your torso back to about a 45-degree angle, engaging your core to maintain balance.
  3. Lift your feet (optional): For a more challenging variation, lift your feet off the ground, keeping your legs bent.
  4. Hold your weight: If using a weight, hold it with both hands at chest level. If not, clasp your hands together.
  5. Twist your torso: Rotate your torso to the right, bringing your hands or weight towards the floor beside your hip.
  6. Reverse the motion: Twist your torso to the left, bringing your hands or weight to the opposite side.
  7. Repeat: Continue alternating sides for the desired number of repetitions.

Form Tips

  • Keep your spine neutral: Avoid rounding your back; maintain a straight spine throughout the exercise.
  • Engage your core: Focus on using your obliques and core muscles to control the movement, not just your arms.
  • Move with control: Perform the twists in a slow and controlled manner to maximize muscle engagement and minimize the risk of injury.

Muscles Targeted

  • Primary Muscles: Obliques
  • Secondary Muscles: Rectus Abdominis, Hip Flexors, Lower Back

The Russian Twist is an excellent exercise for building core strength, particularly in the obliques, and can be easily modified to match your fitness level.
